What is the difference between a cap and a crown?

The crown is the sloped concrete or mortar slab covering the top of the chimney masonry; it directs rain away from the brick. The cap is the metal cover with mesh sides that sits over the flue opening itself. The crown protects the structure; the cap protects the flue — keeping out rain, birds, squirrels, and debris while also acting as a spark arrestor. Most chimneys need both in good condition.

Why a missing or damaged cap causes big problems

An uncapped flue is an open pipe into your home. Rain pours straight onto the damper and liner, rusting metal and cracking clay tile. Animals nest inside, blocking the flue and creating odor and fire risk. And downdrafts push smoke and cold air back into the room. A cap is an inexpensive part that prevents all of these, which is why it is usually the first thing we recommend when one is missing.

Crown repair and replacement

A crown cracks over time from freeze-thaw and from being built too thin originally. Small cracks can be sealed with a flexible crown coating; larger failures need the crown rebuilt with a proper overhang and drip edge so water is thrown clear of the brick. Yes, in almost every case. A cap keeps rain, animals, and debris out of the flue and acts as a spark arrestor. It is one of the least expensive chimney parts and it prevents some of the most expensive damage, so a missing cap is worth replacing promptly.
How do animals get into an uncapped chimney?
Birds, squirrels, and raccoons climb or fly into open flues to nest, especially in spring. Besides the mess and odor, a nest blocks the flue and is a fire hazard. A properly fitted cap with mesh sides keeps them out for good.
What is efflorescence and does a crown cause it?
Efflorescence is the white, chalky staining you see when water moves through masonry and leaves mineral salts behind. It is a sign water is getting in — often through a cracked crown or missing cap. Fixing the water source and the staining together gives a lasting result.
Can a cracked crown be repaired, or must it be replaced?
It depends on the severity. Minor cracks can be sealed with a flexible crown coating that flexes with temperature swings. A crown that is badly broken or was built without an overhang usually needs rebuilding so it sheds water properly.
What material should my cap be?
