Chimney Inspection

Chimney Inspection in Liberty, MO

A chimney inspection checks the flue, liner, damper, crown, and cap for blockage, damage, and fire or moisture hazards. We provide Level 1 and Level 2 inspections with written findings and photos — recommended every year, and required before a home sale or after a chimney fire.

What are the inspection levels?

NFPA 211 defines three inspection levels. A Level 1 is the routine annual check for a system in regular service that has not changed — we examine the readily accessible parts of the chimney and appliance. A Level 2 adds a video scan of the flue interior and is required when you buy or sell a home, after a chimney fire or severe weather event, or when you change the appliance or fuel. A Level 3 is invasive and reserved for cases where a serious hidden hazard is suspected. Most homeowners need a Level 1 each year and a Level 2 at specific trigger points.

When do you need a chimney inspection?

Get an inspection once a year as routine maintenance, and additionally in these situations: before buying or selling a house (a Level 2 protects both parties), after any chimney fire, after an earthquake or a major storm that could have damaged the structure, and whenever you install a new stove, insert, or furnace that vents into the chimney. If you have never had yours inspected, start there before your next fire.

What we check

  • Flue and liner — cracks, gaps, creosote, and blockage.
  • Damper — operation, rust, and seal.
  • Firebox and smoke chamber — damaged brick or mortar.
  • Crown and cap — cracks, missing caps, and water entry points.
  • Exterior masonry — spalling, staining, and failing joints.
  • Clearances — combustible materials too close to the chimney.

What you get from us

You receive a written report in plain language, with photos of anything that needs attention and a note on how urgent it is. If a repair is warranted, we quote it up front — but the inspection is not a sales pitch. Plenty of visits end with “everything looks good, see you next year,” and we will tell you that honestly when it is true.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 inspection?
A Level 1 is a visual check of the accessible parts of a chimney in regular service. A Level 2 adds a camera scan of the flue interior and is required for home sales, after a chimney fire, or when the appliance changes. A Level 3 is invasive and rare.
Do I need a Level 2 inspection to sell my house?
Yes, a Level 2 is the appropriate inspection for a real estate transfer. It documents the interior condition of the flue with a camera, which protects both buyer and seller. We can provide the written report your agent or buyer needs.
How long does an inspection take?
A Level 1 inspection takes about 30 to 60 minutes. A Level 2 with a full camera scan takes longer, typically an hour or more depending on the number of flues and access.
Do you use a camera?
Yes, for Level 2 inspections we run a video camera down the flue so we can see cracks, gaps, and blockages that are invisible from the top or bottom. You are welcome to look at the footage with us.
Will you tell me if my chimney is unsafe to use?
Absolutely. If we find a hazard — a cracked liner, heavy creosote, or a blockage — we will tell you clearly, explain the risk, and recommend you stop using the fireplace until it is corrected. Safety comes before everything else.
Is an inspection separate from a sweep?
They are separate services but often done together. A Level 1 inspection is included when we sweep. You can also book an inspection on its own — for a home purchase, for example — without a cleaning.
Do you inspect gas fireplaces?
Yes. Gas appliances still vent combustion gases and need their venting checked annually for blockage, corrosion, and proper draft. See gas fireplace service.
How much does a chimney inspection cost?
It depends on the level and the number of flues. We quote the price up front before we begin. See our pricing page for current starting rates.
