Why Missouri winters are hard on chimney masonry

Brick and mortar are porous. When they absorb rainwater and that water freezes, it expands and pushes the masonry apart from the inside — the freeze-thaw cycle. What is tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is grinding out failed mortar joints and repacking them with fresh mortar. It restores the strength and the weather seal of the chimney. Done properly with matched mortar, it can add decades to the masonry and prevent water from reaching the brick and liner.
How do I know if it is water damage?
White chalky staining, flaking brick, and recessed mortar are classic water signs. Because water is behind most chimney masonry damage, a good repair fixes the entry point too — typically the crown and cap — not just the cosmetic damage.
Can you match my existing brick and mortar?
Yes. We match brick type and mortar color and mix as closely as possible so repairs blend with the original chimney. On older homes an exact match is not always possible, but we get it close enough that repairs are not an eyesore.
Is a spalling brick chimney dangerous?
It can become so. As brick faces flake away, the wall thins and water penetrates deeper, weakening the structure and eventually the flue. It rarely fails overnight, but it worsens every winter, so it is worth addressing before the damage spreads.
Do you repair the firebox and smoke chamber?
